This building has come to rest in on a peninsula of the south bank of the River Main in Niederrad. The recreational park there lies in a flood plain, with a high-water mark of up to 1.5 metres, and was therefore disused for many years. The snack bar was conceived as “floating object" and its form developed with reference to normal working pontoons. Correspondingly, the steel structure was manufactured by a ship builder and would actually float, should flooding occur. This transformation of an apparently undistinguished craft or pontoon exaggerates the form just enough to border on a more sculptural category.
