| The municipality of Berlin aims to develop the potential
of attractive waterside locations. In 2002 the Wasserstadt GmbH
invited architects and investors from all over Europe to submit
proposals for Floating Homes. The dwellings by Grüntuch Ernst
Architekten, which were awarded a First Commendation in the competition,
are to be installed in a bay area, the Rummelsburger Bucht, next
year. Their scheme envisages a new type of moored housing unit
that can be grouped in various ways. Thus some of the planning
restrictions governing neighbouring sites on land can be left
behind and exchanged for a new way of living.
