In Bochum a former steelworks has inspired a proposal
for an "Innovation Hall", intended both to revitalise
people's concept of steel and relate the history of its manufacture
there. The building represents the future of steel construction
and applies construction methods from aviation and shipbuilding.
The girders of the primary structure are tubular steel sections;
the secondary structure consists of standard rolled sections and
supports the building envelope. For the Ruhr region with its strong
industrial roots, the project to some extent represents culturally
endogenous growth, in contrast to the usual local scenario of
consolidation and cut-backs.
