architects Brückner & Brückner dealt with the listed historical
warehouse on the old harbour in a pragmatic way. In an unsentimental yet
sensitive manner, the historical fabric was given a new lease of urban
life as a centre for exhibitions, theatre and dance. The architects gutted
the building, leaving little but the exterior walls. They extended it
to an overall length of 160 metres, inserting huge concrete cubes and
new floors. Traces of the old structure remain visible throughout the
building. The integration of the culture warehouse with the landscape
of the Veste Marienberg fortress and the adjacent historical town centre
represented a particularly challenging part of the brief to “convert
industrial monuments”.
